The Creek Trail and Flume Trail
run from each end of the Rockslide Trail down to the Army Road below Dipper
Lake. This is one of the best examples of wet zone cedar forest in the Nature
Park. Walking these trails reminds one of coastal old growth with ferns and
devil's club and mosses everywhere. The creek that parallels the lower portion
of the trail runs underground from Dipper Lake and flows quickly down to
Whitetail Valley.
Hiking up
the Creek Trail
takes one past huge cedar and
spruce trees and through lush
and moist wet zone vegetation.
Protected from the sun and wind
in this narrow draw,
and watered by the outflow
from Dipper Lake ferns, mosses
and other moisture loving plants abound.
Devils club, with
its branching
octopus-like arms and needle sharp thorns
is found in only a few places in the Nature Park.
Here along the Creek Trail
the plants can reach over two metres in height.
