A major portion of Golden's history is based on the Columbia River which during its early history served explorers and railway builders as a transportation route while the lumber industry relied on the Columbia's currents to carry logs the five miles from Nicholson to the mill at Golden. The logging industry, along with today's CPR presence and tourism, is still important here.
